Surgical training in the United Kingdom begins after completing either Foundation Year Training (entering at CT1-/ST1-level) or Core Surgical Training (entering at ST3-level) and typically spans 5-8 years, depending on the level of entry.
In the United Kingdom, there are several current surgical specialties available, including:
General Surgery: This specialty offers opportunities to sub-specialise in areas such as upper gastrointestinal surgery, hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, colorectal surgery, transplant surgery, endocrine surgery, and breast surgery. Surgeons in these sub-specialties can further develop skills in endoscopy (upper and lower gastrointestinal), laparoscopy/robotic surgery, vascular surgery, microvascular surgery, and reconstructive surgery.
Plastic Surgery: Sub-specialisations in plastic surgery include complex hand surgery, craniofacial reconstruction, breast reconstruction, abdominal/perineal reconstruction, skin cancer, and congenital/paediatric abnormalities. Surgeons in this field can enhance their expertise in image-guided bone/joint fixation, microvascular surgery, surgical oncology, and tissue transfer.
Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery: Sub-specialisations in this field cover upper limb surgery, spinal surgery, hip/knee surgery, ankle/foot surgery, lower limb reconstruction, bone tumours, sports/exercise surgery, and paediatric orthopaedic surgery. Surgeons in this discipline collaborate with various other specialties, including neurosurgery, care-of-the-elderly medicine, rheumatology, plastic surgery, oncology, and paediatrics.
Vascular Surgery: Surgeons specialising in vascular surgery can focus on areas such as diabetic lower-limb disease, endovascular surgery, complex aortic disease, or renal access. They work closely with other specialties like endocrinology, interventional radiology, cardiology/cardiothoracic surgery, and nephrology.
Cardiothoracic Surgery: This field offers sub-specialisations in cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, heart/lung transplant surgery, and congenital/paediatric cardiac surgery. Surgeons in this domain can expand their skills in vascular/endovascular surgery, microsurgery, and bronchoscopy/video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery.
Urological Surgery: Sub-specialisations in urological surgery include renal tract stone disease, nephroureteric and pelvic cancer, uro-gynecology, testicular disease, and paediatric urology. Surgeons in this field can enhance their surgical skills in cystoscopy and laparoscopy/robotic surgery.
Otolaryngology: This specialty offers sub-specialisations in neuro-otology/skull-base surgery, otology, rhinology, facial plastic surgery, head & neck oncological surgery, voice & complex airway surgery, and paediatric ear nose & throat surgery. Otolaryngologists perform microscopic and endoscopic surgery, collaborating with specialties such as neurosurgery, plastic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, anaesthetics, and paediatrics.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: Surgeons in this field can develop expertise in orthognathic surgery, cleft surgery, craniofacial reconstruction, or head & neck oncological surgery. Operations in this discipline involve both soft and hard tissues, and collaboration with dentistry, plastic surgery, and otolaryngology is common. Note that in the United Kingdom, both a medical and a dental degree are required to enter this pathway.
Neurosurgery: Sub-specialisations in neurosurgery include neuro-oncology, functional neurosurgery, neurovascular surgery, skull-base surgery, spinal surgery, and paediatric surgery. Neurosurgeons often perform emergency operations, particularly for trauma cases. Collaboration with oncologists, neurologists, otolaryngologists, orthopaedic surgeons, and paediatricians is common.
Paediatric Surgery: Surgeons in this specialty can specialise in areas such as neonatal surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, urological surgery, or oncological surgery. Paediatric surgeons handle many day-case procedures and collaborate with specialists from other surgical specialties who have an interest in paediatric cases.
To enter surgical training in the United Kingdom, applicants must fulfil essential criteria such as having a primary medical qualification, employment history, eligibility to work in the United Kingdom, GMC registration/fitness to practice, foundation competencies, language skills, and health requirements. They also need to demonstrate competencies across multiple domains, including clinical skills, communication and non-technical skills, teamwork and leadership/management, audit and quality improvement, teaching skills, research skills, commitment to the specialty, and the ability to self-reflect and self-develop. Additional competencies depend on the specific program being applied for.

We believe that surgical expertise is best obtained through exposure. Therefore, our team can organise real-time NHS experiences for surgeons in various hospitals across the United Kingdom, covering a range of surgical disciplines and grades.
The National Health Service is currently facing unprecedented pressure in terms of resources, funding, staffing, and workload. This has led to an increasing demand for medical staff, including surgeons. While locum and paid opportunities are widely available, trainees are often demotivated by the imbalance between service provision and learning and development opportunities.
At VITASPARK Limited, we believe that training opportunities can coexist with service provision and paid work. Our team has a unique insight into many teaching hospitals throughout the United Kingdom, offering tailored opportunities for learning and development. These placements provide invaluable exposure to busy NHS environments, allowing surgeons to work alongside friendly and supportive staff who deeply appreciate their assistance. The duration of placements can vary from weeks to months, and even up to one year, although we recommend a minimum of four weeks to fully immerse oneself in a department and optimise the learning experience.
We have established partnerships with trusted agencies that we endorse. Their friendly staff will guide you through the process of becoming compliant, assist in applying for desired placements on your behalf, and handle payment arrangements. Clients can earn in excess of £60 per working hour through these placements. We do not charge surgeons any fees for arranging placements. While we do not formally endorse the hospitals we recommend, we suggest placements based on the personal experiences of our team members and valuable feedback from our clients. It is important to note that specific events during placements are the responsibility of the involved clients and the respective departments.
Over a 30-minute consultation, our advisers offer mentorship and advice to surgeons before, during, or after recommended placements. Our aim is to support surgeons in their professional growth and development, ensuring they make the most of their experiences.
