As an acute and major teaching hospital affiliated with Queen’s University Belfast, the vascular surgical department is primarily located at the Royal Victoria Hospital site. The department performs a high volume of vascular surgical procedures each year, consistently ranking among the top in the United Kingdom according to the Vascular Services Quality Improvement Programme (VSQIP) National Vascular Registry (NVR) database.
The services offered by the department cover a wide spectrum of vascular conditions, including peripheral arterial disease, renal and diabetic vascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, aortic disease, venous disease, and vascular trauma.
Additionally, the Royal Victoria Hospital houses a cardiothoracic surgical department, providing an opportunity for exposure to cardiac, thoracic, and proximal arterial pathologies for those interested. Furthermore, individuals with an interest in renal surgery can benefit from learning experiences in the renowned and training-focused renal transplant department at Belfast City Hospital. This department is recognized as one of the leading renal transplant centers in Western Europe and achieved the highest number of successful renal transplants in the United Kingdom during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is important to note that renal access surgery is performed by the renal transplant team rather than the vascular surgical team in Belfast.
